Moving Map on iPhone!

WingX for iPhone Version 3.0 adds GPS-Enabled Terrain-Aware Moving Map.  We are extremely excited about this latest release as it builds upon much of the optimizations we have built into our WingX Technology over the past few years.  We will continue to improve and evolve our Moving Map capabilities on iPhone.

WingX's Moving Map is very impressive.  By using the phenomenal touch screen on iPhone, the entire map for the contiguous US, the Bahamas, Cuba, and Mexico can easily be panned and zoomed.  Displaying the A/FD information or AOPA Directory for an airport or VOR is an easy as tapping on the identifier.  Editing a route has never been as straight-forward - no knob twiddling to learn, just tap-n-add or tap-n-remove - done!  Ever tried to find a VFR Waypoint in an unfamiliar area or at night?  Tap the Waypoint button and select “Embassy Suites” - it could not be more simple.  IFR pilots can display Victor Airways (or Jetways) plus intersections to show a dynamic enroute IFR chart plus encroaching terrain.

In addition to the superb DUATS support in WingX 3.0, we are working on the next update that will enable pilots to optimize their altitude on a cross country to minimize time and fuel burn based on current winds aloft.

The benefits of a built-in terrain database are obvious.  As the aircraft climbs, WingX changes the reds to yellows as that terrain drops below your altitude and yellow changes to green when that terrain is far below.  Conversely, in a descent, more yellows and reds appear are the ground rises up and becomes a factor.  Imagine the safety in IMC with or without lost comm!  By using advanced terrain compression, WingX is able to display the terrain with amazing resolution - no more big chunky blocks that were on the older GPS units.

“With all the items WingX already does well, the moving map is simply AMAZING.
I can plan and actually fly the route in the plane with the iPhone GPS.  An absolute essential.” - Matt

We have had a few users call us urgently to renew their subscription when they found out that they suddenly couldn't file a flight plan or get the latest animated RADAR. An App Store quote from RV7Driver - "I can leave my Macbook home..."

“WingX allows me to plan a flight, get a legal briefing, file a flight plan, easily check the WX at my stops, get runway, comm, and TPA information and finally close my flight plan all with my iPhone. My friend has
<another iPhone app>, but while on a trip I asked him if he got a briefing and he said
'I had to use the hotel computer' that pretty much made the decision easy for me.”

A Word from the CEO

Firstly, thank you for your support and your kind comments.

Moving Map on a cell phone?  It's true, it's here, and I love it!  Imagine being able to pan around your G1000 or to interface with the system simply by touching on identifiers.  That is what we have done.  And it's fast - we spend a lot of time optimizing the graphics engine of the moving map.  Not only does that improve the user-experience, but it is also flexible enough to allow us to add more and more features.  For example, our next update will include an option to display runway extensions and we'll be adding a lot more after that.  The iPhone is an amazing platform and we're having a great time developing on it.

We are planning on releasing an update to our AOPA Airports application for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry later this month.  These improvements will be included in new WingX updates too.

It's AOPA Aviation Summit again (nee AOPA Expo).  For those of you heading to out to Tampa, have fun, enjoy all the new aviation goodies, and most importantly, fly safely.  With WingX there is no reason not to get weather for your route.  One day I need to make that trip from the West Coast.

Thanks again for your support.

Always fly as though the DE is sitting next to you,
